Start page

The Start page works like a browser's new tab. Press ⌘T from anywhere in Lino and it opens over whatever you were doing: Lino AI waiting for a question at the top, and under it what you are likely to come back to — what is due today, the Artifacts you touched last, and your recent Canvases.

Open and close it

  • Open: press ⌘T, or choose File → New Tab. The key hint in the page's top-left corner reminds you: ⌘T opens this anywhere.
  • Close: press ⌘T again, press Esc, click the X in the top-right corner, or click anywhere outside the page. Entering a Canvas from the page also closes it.
  • At launch: when Lino starts (or the window reloads), the Start page opens by itself once the app is ready. It stays out of the way if something else needs you first — sign-in, onboarding, a dialog, an upgrade prompt, or an AI chat that is still running.
  • From an empty Canvas: the "Ask anything…" box on a blank Canvas opens the Start page too.

Ask Lino AI

The composer at the top is the real AI panel, not a copy.

  1. Click the line that says Ask anything….
  2. Type your question or request. Type / for Skills and commands, or @ to mention an Artifact.
  3. Press ↵ to send.

Opening the Start page always starts a new chat; your earlier conversation stays in the AI panel's History. Once you send something, the recent lists make way for the conversation. When you close the page, the chat moves to the AI panel in the bottom-right corner and carries on there. To move a draft to the corner without sending it, use Continue in chat panel.

The chat belongs to the Canvas behind the page — the one you were on when you pressed ⌘T.

If you scroll down, the composer folds into a small Ask anything… pill at the top. Click it to scroll back up to the composer.

Quick actions

Under the composer are a few buttons that start common requests. Each one puts a command in front of whatever you have already typed; it never erases your words.

ButtonWhat it does
Create CanvasInserts /create-canvas. Say what you want to start (e.g. "/create-canvas Spanish vocabulary"), and Lino AI finds or makes a Canvas for it, writes what it is for, and gathers Artifacts you already have that fit.
Plan my dayInserts /plan-my-day. Lino AI lays out today from your calendar and your due tasks. Anything you add after the command is taken into account.
Learn somethingOnly shown when the feynman Skill is installed. Starts a chat that explains a concept simply and finds the gaps in your understanding. See Skills.

Upcoming

When there is something ahead, Upcoming is the first section under the composer. It shows today's date and a count such as "2 tasks · 1 event".

  • Next (or Now, while an event is under way) — the next event or task, large, on the left, with how long until it starts or how long is left.
  • The list beside it — up to three more items, filled from the next two weeks when today runs short. Labels such as Overdue, Due today, Tomorrow or All day tell you when each one is.
  • Click an event to open it in the Schedule; click a task to open the Card or Table it lives in.

Hover the section heading for two more buttons:

  • Open calendar — opens the Schedule in the Right Panel, maximized, on today.
  • New (+) — New task or New event, created in the Schedule.

Events come from calendars you have bound in Settings → System → Calendars; tasks are the checklist items and Table rows that appear in the Schedule.

Recent Artifacts and Recent Canvases

  • Recent Artifacts — up to 12 of the Artifacts you changed most recently (Cards, Images, Links, Sketches, Tables, Sparks). Double-click one to open it (or select it and press ↵).
  • Recent Canvases — up to 8 recent Canvases. Double-click one to enter it. If you have no Canvases yet, a dashed + tile makes a new Untitled Canvas and takes you there.

Tips

  • Use ⌘T as "new chat about something else": the old chat is one click away in History.
  • The Start page shows only the composer, not the AI panel's other buttons (Background tasks, History, New chat). Close the page to get them back.
