Background Tasks
Some of Lino AI's work takes longer than a reply should wait. That work runs in the background: the chat stays free, and you can watch it, read what came back, or stop it.
What runs in the background
Some work runs in the background so the chat doesn't freeze:
- Commands that run longer than about 20 seconds move to the background and keep going; Lino AI checks on them instead of starting them twice.
- Subagents (below).
- System work such as writing picture descriptions.
Open them with Background tasks at the panel's bottom-left. Two tabs: This chat and System. Tasks are grouped as Running and Finished; each running one shows what it is doing and has Stop task. Failures stay visible with their output. Clear removes the records (the work already happened).
Subagents
For work that splits into independent pieces — reading an unfamiliar folder, researching several topics, double-checking its own work — Lino AI can hand pieces to subagents that run on their own and report back.
- Up to three run at once.
- What comes back into your chat is a summary, not the whole transcript, so parallel research doesn't flood it. Expand a subagent's row in Background tasks to read everything it did.
- A subagent's questions and permission requests appear in your chat, marked Subagent.
- A failed subagent can be resumed.
