Use a Spark
You can run a Spark in two places: right on a Canvas, next to the Cards it came from, or in the Right Panel, where it gets the whole panel. Both run the same page with the same saved data, so a score you reach on the Canvas is still there when you open it in the Right Panel.
Put a Spark on a Canvas
A new Spark from Lino AI starts in your Inbox. To place it, or any other Spark:
- From the Inbox — drag the Spark onto the Canvas.
- From the Artifacts Gallery — open the Spark tab and drag a Spark onto the Canvas.
- From the Right Panel — while the Spark is open in the Browser tab, click Add to Canvas in the tab's toolbar. If the Spark is already on the current Canvas, the same button reads Show in Canvas and takes you to it.
A Canvas holds each Spark only once. To have the same Spark on another Canvas, use Copy to Canvas... from its right-click menu.
A placed Spark starts at 424 × 560 px.
Run a Spark on the Canvas
On a Canvas, a Spark shows a still cover picture until you run it. Covers cost nothing to show, so a Canvas with many Sparks stays fast.
- Hover over the Spark. A hint below it reads Double-click to activate.
- Double-click the Spark. Lino moves the Canvas so the whole Spark is in view, then starts it. A ring around the Spark shows that it is running.
- Use it — click, type, drag inside it.
- To stop, click anywhere outside the Spark. It goes back to its cover.
Only one Spark runs on a Canvas at a time. Double-clicking another Spark stops the first one.
While a Spark is running
- Its corner controls hide. The name chip, the Properties button, the hover tools and the Connection badge disappear, so the Spark's own buttons in the corners are clickable. They come back when you stop it.
- It doesn't move. Dragging inside a running Spark is used by the Spark. To move it, click outside to stop it first, then drag it.
- Switching views stops it. Turning on Bento view or going back to the Canvas stops a running Spark. Double-click to start it again.
In Bento view
In Bento view a Spark sits in its tile. Double-click the tile to run it there, laid out for the tile's size.
Resize a Spark
Drag any edge or corner of the Spark. Width and height change freely — there is no locked aspect ratio, because a Spark is a web page and re-flows to fit the new size instead of stretching.
A Spark can't be smaller than 424 × 424 px. When you let go, Lino renders a fresh cover at the new size.
Scale a Spark's content
Sometimes a Spark is laid out too big or too small for the space you gave it. Content scale zooms what is inside the Spark without changing its size on the Canvas.
- Hover over the Spark and click Content scale (the magnifier) at the top right.
- A small toolbar appears above the Spark. Click
−or+to change the scale in 10% steps, from 50% to 200%. - Click outside to close the toolbar.
The scale belongs to this placement only. The same Spark on another Canvas keeps its own scale, and the Right Panel and Bento view always run it at 100%.
Open a Spark in the Right Panel
The Right Panel gives a Spark more room and keeps it open while you move around your Canvases.
- On a Canvas, hover over the Spark and click Open in Right Panel.
- In the Artifacts Gallery, double-click the Spark. In the Inbox, right-click it and choose Open in Right Panel.
- In a Lino AI reply or a Card, click the Spark's block.
The Spark opens as a page in the Right Panel's Browser tab. The tab shows the Spark's glyph and title, and the Browser's history lists Sparks you've opened with their glyph. Press ⌘W to close the page.
The tab's More menu has the Spark's actions:
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Properties / Hide properties | Shows or hides the Spark's Properties under the toolbar. |
| Hide from AI | Stops Lino AI from reading this Spark. |
| Copy as a reference | Copies the Spark so you can paste it into a Card or Table. |
| Modify with AI / Remix with AI | Asks Lino AI to change this Spark, or a copy of it. See Change a Spark with AI. |
| Delete | Deletes the Spark everywhere. |
The Spark's right-click menu
Right-click a Spark on a Canvas:
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Hide from AI | A switch. When on, Lino AI can't read this Spark. |
| Copy as a reference | Copies the Spark so you can paste it into a Card or Table. |
| Modify with AI | Asks Lino AI to change this Spark. |
| Remix with AI | Makes a copy of the Spark and asks Lino AI to change the copy. |
| Connect to... | Starts a Connection from this Spark; click the object to connect it to. |
| Move to Canvas... | Moves the Spark to another Canvas. |
| Copy to Canvas... | Places the same Spark on another Canvas as well. |
| Remove from Group | Shown when the Spark is in a Group. |
| Remove instance | Takes the Spark off this Canvas only. The Spark stays in the Artifacts Gallery and on other Canvases. |
| Delete | Deletes the Spark everywhere. Press ⌘Z to undo, or restore it from Recently deleted within 30 days. |
Properties and Connections
Click the Properties button in the Spark's top-left corner to see its Properties. A Spark has Title, Description and Category, which you can edit, plus Forked from if it was made with Remix, and Created and Updated dates. You can add your own Properties too, as on a Card (see Properties).
A Spark can be connected to Cards and other objects like anything else on a Canvas. Drag from its Connection badge, or use Connect to... (see Connecting objects).
Clean up unused Sparks
In the Artifacts Gallery's Spark tab, the Unused pill at the bottom counts Sparks that aren't on any Canvas. Click it to delete them all at once. As with any delete, ⌘Z brings them back.
