Organizing Canvases

The navigator is the panel in the top-left corner that lists every Canvas in the current Space as a tree. It's where you jump between Canvases and keep them in order.

Open the navigator

Click the button in the top-left corner that shows where you are (the current Canvas and its path). Click it again, or click the Canvas, to close it.

From top to bottom, the panel has:

  1. Search canvases... with Import from... and More (⋮) beside it.
  2. The Space switcher — see Spaces.
  3. Recent — the Canvases you opened last.
  4. The Canvas tree of this Space.

Find a Canvas

Type in Search canvases.... Search looks across all your Spaces and matches a Canvas by its name and by its Canvas memory (the overview, progress and notes). A result inside another Canvas shows its path above its name. Click Clear to go back to the tree.

Recent

Recent lists the Canvases you opened most recently, each with how long ago. Switch between This Space and All Spaces. Click the Recent heading to collapse or expand the list. Canvases you've archived don't appear here.

"Last opened" is remembered per computer, so Recent can differ between your devices.

Sort the tree

Beside the Space's name above the tree:

  • Manual — your own order, set with Move Up / Move Down (see below). New Canvases appear at the top until you move something.
  • Last opened — a flat list, most recently opened first. Nested Canvases are listed on their own, with their parent's path shown above the name.

Fold and unfold

Click the arrow beside a Canvas to fold or unfold the Canvases inside it. Collapse all / Expand all (or clicking the Space's name above the tree) folds every branch at once. Lino remembers your folds for each Space.

What a Canvas row shows

At rest, a row shows the Canvas's icon, its name, and on the right how many items it holds — plus its folder if one is bound. Hover the row to see its buttons:

  • Folder chip — the bound folder, or a shortcut to Bind a folder if there is none. See Canvas Binding.
  • Canvas Memory (brain icon) — what Lino AI knows about this Canvas: Overview, Progress, Instructions & Notes and Context Artifacts. See Memory & Profile.
  • More (⋮) — the row menu. Right-clicking the row opens the same menu.

Click anywhere else on the row to open the Canvas.

The row menu

ItemWhat it does
Bind a folder... / Change folder...Link a folder on your computer so Lino AI can work inside it.
Unbind folderRemove the link. The folder and its files are untouched.
Move Up / Move DownChange the Canvas's place in Manual order.
RenameEdit the name in place. Return saves, Esc cancels.
Move to Canvas...Put this Canvas inside another Canvas, or at the top of another Space.
ArchiveMove the Canvas (and everything inside it) to Archived.
DeleteOnly for Canvases already in Archived.

Change a Canvas's icon

Click the icon at the start of the row (Change Icon) and pick an emoji. Without one, a Canvas shows the default Canvas icon.

Nest and un-nest Canvases

Canvases can sit inside other Canvases. To change where one lives, use Move to Canvas... from the row menu (or from the right-click menu of its tile on a Canvas) and pick the destination. Choose a Space to put it at that Space's top level.

Archive instead of delete

Lino deliberately has no Delete for an active Canvas. Archive puts it away safely in Archived, from where you can bring it back with Move to Canvas... — or delete it for good. See Daily Drafts & Archive.

When you delete a Canvas, Lino asks first and tells you what will happen:

  • Cards, Images and other items on it stay in your Artifacts Gallery.
  • If Canvases are nested inside it, choose Delete All (they go too) or Delete Only This Canvas (they move up to its parent).
  • Deleting a Canvas can't be undone.
