Right Panel
The Right Panel docks to the right of your Canvas. It gives you a second place to work: open an Artifact at full size, check your tasks and calendar, read a PDF, or look something up on the web, all without leaving the Canvas. It has four tabs, and whatever you open in one stays put while you use another.
The four tabs
| Tab | Shortcut | What it is for | Learn more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Artifacts | ⌘⇧G | The Artifacts Gallery: every Card, Image, Link, Sketch, Chart, Table and Spark you have, searchable. Anything you open in the panel opens here. | Artifacts Gallery |
| Schedule | ⌘⇧D | Your to-dos from Cards and Tables, as a list or on a calendar, next to the events in your bound calendars. | Schedule, Calendar |
| Files | ⌘⇧P | A reader for files on your computer: PDFs, EPUBs, images, audio, video, code and text. | Files Preview |
| Browser | ⌘⇧B | A web browser with bookmarks, profiles and history. Drag text and pictures from a page into Lino. | Browser |
Open and close the panel
- Title bar buttons. At the top right of the window are four buttons: Artifacts, Schedule, Files and Browser. Click one to open the panel on that tab. Click the button of the tab that is already showing to close the panel.
- Shortcuts. Use the shortcuts in the table above.
- Panel toggle. The last button in the row (Open panel / Close panel) shows or hides the panel without changing the tab.
- Launcher. If the panel opens with no tab chosen, it shows a launcher with four buttons: Artifacts Gallery, Schedule, Files Preview and Browser, each with its shortcut.
When the window is narrow, the title bar buttons shrink to icons.
What the title bar buttons tell you
Each button has a small sign on its right that says what its tab is doing:
| Sign | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Filled button with a grey dot | This tab is showing now. Hover it and the dot becomes ×: click to close the panel. |
| Filled button with ↗ | The tab is in the background but still holds something: a web page, an open file, an Artifact, an open event. |
| Speaker icon | The Browser or Files tab is playing sound in the background (a video, a podcast). |
| Plain ↗, no fill | Nothing is open in that tab. |
The Schedule button also shows a small dot when you have unfinished tasks.
Tabs keep their place
Switching tabs does not throw anything away:
- Browser and Files keep running in the background, even when you close the panel. A video keeps playing, a page keeps its scroll position, a book stays on its page.
- Artifacts remembers the Artifact you had open and shows it again when you come back.
- Schedule is the exception. An event you opened there closes when you leave the tab.
The tab header
Every tab has the same header row:
- A search field on the left. In Artifacts it searches the Gallery, in Schedule your tasks, in Files your history and folders. In Browser the header is the address bar instead.
- Back and Forward buttons inside the field.
- When something is open (an Artifact, a file, a page, an event), it appears as a small tab to the right of the field, with its name, its own buttons, a More menu and a × to close it.
- Maximize at the far right.
When the panel is narrow, the buttons that don't fit move into More. While you type in the search field the open tab shrinks to its icon to make room, and its buttons come back when you leave the field.
Go back and forward
Each tab keeps its own Back / Forward history. In Artifacts it holds the Artifacts you opened, in Files the files, in Browser the pages, and in Schedule the events. "Nothing open" counts as a step too: open a file and Back takes you back to the list; close it and Back reopens it.
You can also swipe with two fingers sideways on the trackpad over the panel, as in Arc:
- Fingers to the right go Back; fingers to the left go Forward.
- An arrow slides in from the edge while you swipe. When it darkens with a small bounce, let go to take the step. If there is nothing to go back or forward to, the arrow only peeks in.
- Over something that scrolls sideways itself, such as a zoomed-in PDF or a wide Table, the swipe scrolls that instead. The same goes for a Sketch or a Mermaid diagram that you are panning.
Close things with ⌘W
⌘W closes one thing at a time, the smallest first, like closing tabs in a web browser:
- If the current tab has something open (a page, a file, an Artifact, an event),
⌘Wcloses it and the tab shows its list again. - If the current tab holds nothing,
⌘Wmoves to the next tab that still holds something, in title-bar order. - If no tab holds anything,
⌘Wfolds the panel away. - If the panel is already closed,
⌘Wcloses the window.
Resize and maximize
- Resize: drag the panel's left edge. The panel is at least 400 px wide, and it never squeezes the Canvas below 600 px.
- Maximize: click Maximize (the last button in the tab header) to let the panel fill the whole window. Click Restore panel width to put it back. While maximized, a Close panel button sits at the left of the header.
Open an Artifact in the panel
Every Artifact (Card, Image, Link, Sketch, Chart, Table, Spark) opens in the Artifacts tab. There is no separate editor window. To open one:
- Hover an object on the Canvas and click Open in Right Panel in its header.
- Double-click an Artifact in the Artifacts Gallery.
- Click Open in Right Panel on a Card or Table in the Schedule.
The Artifact opens as a tab next to the Gallery's search field. Its × takes you back to the Gallery list, and Back works the same way. On the far right of that tab are Add to Canvas and ×. More holds the actions the Canvas and the Gallery offer too, such as Copy as a reference, Hide from AI, View history and Delete.
A Link opens in the Browser tab, because a Link is a web address, not a document.
You still make things on the Canvas: create a Sketch or a Spark there, then open it in the panel when you want more room. For what a Card looks like in the panel, see Artifacts Gallery → Write in a Card here.
