Export

Everything you make in Lino can leave Lino in an open format. Copy a Card into another app as Markdown, save a Sketch as a picture, or export your whole library before switching computers. Exporting never changes or removes anything in Lino.

The export actions are in the right-click menu of an object — on a Canvas, on a tile in the Artifacts Gallery, or on its tab in the Right Panel. They all work the same way.

Cards

Right-click a Card:

  • Copy as Markdown — copies the Card to your clipboard as Markdown. You'll see Copied as Markdown. Paste it into Obsidian, a chat, an email or a document.
  • Export as Markdown — saves the Card as a .md file; you choose where. You'll see Exported followed by the file name.

A Card with no text has nothing to export, so nothing happens.

Select several Cards first and the menu offers Export N Cards, which saves them together as one zip of .md files.

The exported file starts with frontmatter: the Card's Concept, Aliases and Variable (for a Concept Card), its Properties, and a lino-id line. If you later import that file with Smart Sync on, Lino recognizes the Card and reconnects to it instead of making a copy. See Smart Sync.

Images and Sketches

Right-click an Image or a Sketch:

  • Copy as PNG — copies the picture to your clipboard. You'll see Copied as PNG.
  • Download — opens the download options to save it as a file. With several Images (or several Sketches) selected, it reads Download N Images / Download N Sketches.

Tables

Right-click a Table → Export as MD + CSV. Lino downloads one zip with two files named after the Table: a .md file with it as a Markdown table, and a .csv file you can open in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets. You'll see Table exported.

Everything at once

To export your whole library, go to Settings → Data & Privacy and click Export all in the Backups row. You get one zip with a library.json that holds everything, plus your images and link files. See Your Data.
