Table

A Table is a grid of rows and columns that sits on your Canvas. Use it for anything list-shaped: a reading list, a task tracker, a comparison of options, a glossary. Each column has a type — text, number, date, status, person… — so the Table can sort, filter, group and even feed your Schedule.

Example: a "Reading list" Table with the columns Title (Text), Paper (Artifact — a Link to the PDF), Status (Status: Not started / Reading / Done) and Due (Date).

Create a Table

Right-click a blank spot on the Canvas → Table ("Structured rows, properties"). You get an untitled Table with one text column, Item, and one empty row.
Drag a connection out to empty space and choose Table: the new Table starts out connected.
Ask Lino AI ("make a table of the papers on this Canvas with year and author"). It shows you the Table to review; after you apply it, the Table lands in your Inbox.

To name the Table, click its title (it reads "untitled" at first) and type.

The /Table command inside a Card makes a simple table in the Card's text, not a Table object.

Edit on the Canvas

Hover the Table — the hint says Double-click to edit — and double-click. An editing ring shows around it. Now you can:

Edit a cell: click it. ↵ saves, ⇧↵ adds a line break, esc cancels. Select, Status, Person and Date cells open a picker.
Add a row: + New under the last row, or hover a row's left edge and click + (click adds below, ⌥-click adds above).
Row actions: click a row's grip (or right-click the row): Insert row above, Insert row below, Delete row.
Reorder rows: drag the grip. (Not while the Table is sorted — the grip says so.)
Select rows: tick the row checkboxes, then Delete selected rows or Clear selection.
Add a column: + Property at the right end of the header.

Press esc or click outside to stop editing. If a menu is open, the first esc or click only closes the menu.

Columns and their types

Click a column header to open its menu:

Item	What it does
Name field	Rename the column.
Edit property	Type settings — date and time format, number format and decimal places, the options of a Select or Status, and so on.
Change type	Switch to another type (see below).
Filter / Sort / Group	Shortcuts into the view settings — see Table Views.
Freeze / Unfreeze	Keep this column and the ones to its left in place while scrolling sideways. One freeze at a time.
Hide / Show	Hide the column in this view.
Wrap content / Unwrap content	Let long text wrap onto several lines.
Show sub table / Hide sub table	Artifact columns only (see below).
Insert left / Insert right	Add a column next to this one.
Duplicate property / Delete property	Copy or remove the column.

Drag a header to reorder columns; drag its edge to resize.

Column types

Text, Number, Select, Multi-select, Status, Date, Checkbox, URL, Email, Phone, Formula, Place, Person and Artifact.

When you change type, Lino converts what it can and drops what it can't (for example, words in a column you turn into Number). Press ⌘Z right away if you lose something you wanted. Option names carry over between Select, Multi-select and Status.

Reference other objects from cells

Cells can point at your Cards, Links, Images and other Artifacts:

In a Text or URL cell, type @ and pick an object to insert a Reference chip. (URL cells take Link chips only.) Or right-click any object → Copy as a reference and paste it into a cell.
An Artifact column holds exactly one object per cell, of one kind — Card, Link, Image, Sketch, Table or Spark. You pick the kind when you create the column, or the first chip you put in decides it.

Each object a Table references gets an automatic embeds Connection from the Table, one per object however many cells mention it. It goes away when the last mention does. On the Canvas these lines are hidden by default, so a big Table doesn't cover your Canvas in lines; they still appear in the Table's Connection list. To draw them, turn off Settings → Connection Labels → Hide Table Embeds. See Embeds.

Sub-tables

An Artifact column can open a sub-table: the referenced objects' own properties, shown as extra columns beside it, row for row. Click Show sub table in the column's header or menu.

Editing a sub-table cell edits the object itself — the same property you see in that Card's properties.
+ Property in the sub-table adds a property to every object in it.
Sub-table columns can be Relation properties, which draw labelled Connections from each object. See Relationships.

Example: in the Reading list, show the sub-table of Paper, and each Link's Title and your own Year property appear next to it.

Size

A Table grows and shrinks to fit its content. Dragging a resize handle sets a fixed size; Fit to content in the header switches back.

Open in the Right Panel

Click the panel button in the Table's header to open it in the Right Panel with more room. There you get the view toolbar, a footer with "N rows · M columns", Add to Canvas / Show in Canvas, and the More menu: Hide from AI, Copy as a reference, Export as MD + CSV, View history, Delete.

Export

Right-click → Export as MD + CSV saves the whole Table — every row and column, whatever the current view hides — as a Markdown file and a CSV file.

Lino AI and Tables

Lino AI can read your Tables and query them ("which papers are still unread?"), create new Tables, and propose edits: add, rename, retype or remove columns; insert, update or delete rows. Edits come as a proposal you review and apply. It doesn't change views. To keep a Table away from Lino AI, turn on Hide from AI.

Good to know

Deleting a row never deletes the Cards or Links its cells point to.
A Table can be on many Canvases, once per Canvas; each placement keeps its own view settings.
Changing a column's type can drop values — ⌘Z is the way back.
